“The State of Our Health: Through the Voices of Our People” was a daylong event that I created to provide a diverse open community conversation between survivors of health issues, medical personnel, and the community. The symposium was free. I was responsible for budgeting, planning, organizing, managing all aspects of the event, finding grants, and securing sponsorships. There were free blood pressure tests, prostate cancer screenings, glucose tests, Ingham Health Plan representatives and well-known speakers who had experienced a health issue. This event occurred in 2008 and 2009 and had over 1,500 attendees.
